The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Bikash Chandra Sarkar, identified as one of the key masterminds behind the armed attack on the New Guinea Property housing project in the capital's ECB Chattar area.
Bikash was apprehended in Magura late Sunday night, a senior DB official confirmed on Monday (October 5).
According to investigative sources, Bikash had previously attempted to negotiate a settlement between land owners, including project chairman Nazimuddin Bhuiyan and retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
When negotiations failed, Bikash allegedly helped the primary accused, Shahria Mahmud, hire armed assailants to carry out the attack.
Meanwhile, six arrested suspects—including Shahria Mahmud, Muktijoddha Projonmo League leader Shah Alam Anik, and Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Kushtia-2 Jamaat-e-Islami MP Md. Abdur Gafur—have been brought to the DB office on Minto Road after a court granted a three-day remand on Sunday.
Following the completion of his three-day remand, retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury was presented before the court on Sunday and subsequently granted bail.
AFM Anwar Hossain Khan, Deputy Commissioner of DB (Gulshan Division), confirmed that the six suspects are undergoing detailed interrogation regarding their involvement in the violence.
Police said the attack occurred on September 26 at around 11:15 PM over a land dispute, targeting the New Guinea housing project and a nearby studio belonging to content creator Salman Muqtadir.
Assailants fired around 50 blank shots during the vandalism and looting, causing widespread panic. Investigations revealed that hired criminals and local slum residents were mobilized for the assault, while efforts remain underway to recover the firearms used in the incident.
