At 78 years old, Lutfor Rahman has spent five decades providing education to underprivileged children in Gaibandha, charging symbolic tuition fees of just Tk 1 per student.
Known locally as the "One-Taka Master," Lutfor began his teaching journey in 1975 after poverty prevented him from pursuing higher education beyond passing his SSC exams in 1972.
What started as free tutoring evolved into a nominal charge of Tk 1 per child following requests from parents, a fee structure he has maintained for 50 years.
Despite losing his ancestral property to river erosion and living in a dilapidated tin-shed house along the flood protection embankment in Baguria village under Gidari Union, Lutfor travels daily by bicycle or on foot to teach 70 to 80 children across surrounding villages.
Over the last 50 years, many of his former students have gone on to become doctors, engineers, bankers, and teachers. Lutfor emphasized that his primary goal remains shaping impoverished children into educated, good citizens rather than seeking financial gain.
Local guardians and union council officials praised his lifelong dedication, urging government support to assist the aging teacher in continuing his noble mission.
