Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government has taken an initiative to prepare master plans for all districts and city corporations to ensure planned urbanisation across the country.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking World Habitat Day 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on Monday.

The prime minister said Bangladesh’s towns and cities are witnessing a steady rise in population, with Dhaka now facing severe overcrowding. Other cities, too, are experiencing similar pressure, with populations far exceeding their normal capacity.

Against this backdrop, he said the theme of this year’s World Habitat Day-- 'Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanisation' --is particularly important.

“Alongside ensuring safe, quality and affordable housing for everyone in cities, it is essential to build environmentally friendly and well-planned urban areas.''

He described access to livable, affordable, environmentally sustainable and safe housing with basic services as a fundamental constitutional right of citizens, saying the government is firmly committed to protecting and ensuring that right.

The prime minister said the government’s goal is to develop planned, safe, environmentally friendly and inclusive cities.
