The prosecution has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking to increase the 10-year prison sentence handed down to former information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haq Inu in a crimes against humanity case to the death penalty.
Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim confirmed that the appeal was filed with the relevant section of the Supreme Court on Monday morning.
On June 30, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Inu to 10 years in prison on each of three charges of crimes against humanity. However, the tribunal ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning he is to serve a total of 10 years in prison.
The prosecution appealed the sentence on Monday, arguing that the punishment was inadequate. Prosecutor Tamim said the state expects Inu’s sentence to be increased based on the grounds presented in the appeal.
The investigation into the case against Inu began on March 25, 2025, and the investigation report was submitted to the tribunal on September 11 of the same year.
The prosecution subsequently submitted formal charges on September 25, 2025. Following hearings from both sides, the tribunal framed charges against Inu on November 2, 2025.
