A police sub-inspector was found dead at a house in the Kafrul area of the capital on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as KM Mahmudul Hasan, 42, who was serving at Bhasantek Police Station.
Kafrul Police Station Inspector Saiful Islam confirmed the incident, saying police recovered the body from Alok Hospital in Mirpur in the afternoon after receiving the news. Hasan lived in Section 13 of Mirpur and was originally from Gaibandha.
Quoting the family, police said Hasan allegedly died by suicide after hanging himself at his residence when no one else was there. Family members later found him hanging and took him to Alok Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy after completing the necessary legal procedures. The autopsy was completed on Monday.
Police said the initial investigation suggests that Hasan died by suicide, but the reason behind it could not be determined. An investigation is underway.
