BCS preps outdo academic engagement

Higher education has expanded rapidly in Bangladesh, with more universities and a growing number of graduates entering the labour market each year. Yet, alongside this expansion, a striking trend is emerging on university campuses: for many students, academic life is increasingly being shaped by preparation for the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.

University libraries, residential halls, coaching centres and online platforms are now important spaces for BCS preparation. Many students spend hours studying Bangla, English, mathematics, general knowledge, Bangladesh affairs, international affairs and current affairs alongside their regular academic courses.

For some, BCS preparation begins in the first year of university. Others intensify their preparation in the final years, often giving greater priority to competitive examination materials than to their own academic disciplines.

One university student said completing academic courses was necessary for obtaining a degree, but additional preparation was essential to compete in the job market.

“Balancing university studies with BCS preparation is difficult because both require considerable time and attention,” the student said.

Another student said a government job was considered a secure and socially respected career, making the BCS the primary goal for many young people.

The attraction to government employment is not new. Job security, social recognition, salary and benefits, structured career progression and administrative responsibilities have traditionally made public-sector jobs highly sought after. The BCS offers opportunities to join various cadres, including administration, police, foreign affairs, education, taxation and customs. Family expectations and wider social attitudes also influence students' career choices.

However, the growing dominance of BCS preparation raises a broader question: Is university education increasingly becoming a pathway to a competitive examination rather than a period of intellectual and professional development?

Educationists say preparing for the BCS is not inherently problematic. Competitive examination preparation can encourage regular reading and improve students' knowledge of history, science, economics, current affairs and language.

The concern arises when preparation for a recruitment examination begins to overshadow subject-specific education, research, creativity and professional skills.

A university is expected to help students develop analytical thinking, communication skills, research capacity, problem-solving ability and professional competence. A recruitment examination, by contrast, represents only one possible route into employment.

The trend is particularly visible in the growing ecosystem surrounding BCS preparation. Students now attend coaching programmes, follow online classes and participate in social media groups where they exchange model tests, current-affairs materials, examination strategies and book recommendations.
