North Korea has sharply criticised the United States for selling weapons and providing military support to Taiwan while expressing support for Russia amid the Ukraine war.
In an article published by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday, Pyongyang accused Washington of increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and condemned the supply of US fighter jets to Taiwan.
The article quoted North Korean international affairs analyst Kim Myong Chol as saying that US policy on Taiwan was undermining peace and stability in the region.
He warned that the US should consider whether it was prepared to confront China’s growing national power over Taiwan and deal with the consequences.
North Korea’s comments closely aligned Pyongyang with Beijing’s position on Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claim.
North Korea has strengthened ties with both China and Russia in recent years. In a separate KCNA report, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also pledged continued support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and said Pyongyang would continue working with Moscow under their strategic partnership.
According to Ukrainian and South Korean estimates, North Korea has sent around 14,000-15,000 troops to support Russia in the war since 2024.
