Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson learned she had won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature while sweeping the kitchen floor at her home in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Thursday (October 8).
The Swedish Academy awarded Carson the prestigious prize for her “bold and inventive” body of work, highlighting her creative engagement with ancient Greek texts and contribution to contemporary literature.
Carson initially missed several calls from the Nobel Committee because she usually turns off her phone when it rings. Her husband eventually answered a call and persuaded her to call back, leading her to learn about the award.
Born in Toronto in 1950, the 76-year-old writer is known for her poetry, translations and works inspired by classical Greek literature. She has lived in Iceland and became an Icelandic citizen in 2008.
