A probe committee at Rajshahi University (RU) has recommended the temporary suspension of four students following an assault on working journalists by activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam announced the findings during a press briefing held at the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room on Friday (October 9) at 12:00 PM. He noted that the University Syndicate would make the final decision regarding the panel's recommendations.
The students recommended for temporary suspension include Ahsan Habib, Vice-President of the RU JCD unit and student of the Department of Law (2013–14 session); Hasibul Islam Hasib, Joint General Secretary of the branch JCD and student of the Department of History (2017–18 session); and Bishal Chakraborty, JCD activist and student of the Department of Economics (2021–22 session).
Additionally, the panel recommended the temporary suspension of Ariful Islam, General Secretary of the Ziaur Rahman Hall Union, for his role as an instigator.
The committee further advised deeper investigations into charges against Takbir Ahmed Emon, JCD Vice-President and student at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA); Syed Sajharul Islam, JCD Assistant General Secretary; Tanim Rahman, JCD activist and Journalism student; and Rakibul Islam, Assistant Cultural Secretary of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU).
Meanwhile, three other JCD officials—Vice-Presidents Bulbul Rahman and Shariful Islam, alongside Assistant Office Secretary Shahriar Alam—were recommended to receive formal warnings.
Speaking at the briefing, VC Professor Faridul Islam stated that the investigation committee submitted its report within the 72-hour deadline. He urged all parties to remain patient pending the outcome of the secondary probe.
Professor Rezaul Karim-2, convener of the investigation panel, highlighted that Ariful Islam and Rakibul Islam played pivotal roles as instigators behind recent campus disruptions, adding that documentary evidence formed the basis for the recommended suspensions.
