The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has recommended filling all vacant headteacher posts at government primary schools as soon as possible, along with making moral education compulsory at the primary level.

The recommendations were made at the committee’s first meeting, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (October 7), with committee chairperson Mahamuda Habiba MP in the chair.

The committee also stressed ensuring food quality and children’s nutrition under the ongoing school feeding programme. It recommended punitive action against those responsible if the quality of food served under the programme is not maintained.

The committee further recommended taking necessary measures to ensure proper implementation of budget allocations under various sectors.

At the meeting, officials presented PowerPoint presentations on sector-wise allocations, expenditure plans and budget implementation until June 30, 2027, under the Directorate of Primary Education, Bureau of Non-Formal Education, Bangladesh Shishu Kalyan Trust, National Academy for Primary Education and Compulsory Primary Education Implementation Monitoring Unit.

During discussions, committee members recommended increasing the number of primary schools to ensure all children in the country have access to primary education.

They were also advised to conduct field visits to primary schools while classes are in session.

The meeting was attended by Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan, State Minister Bobby Hajjaj and committee members Lutfur Rahman Khan Azad, Md Abdus Salam, Md Sadik Riaz, Md Ilias Molla, Md Moktar Ali and Mahfuza Hannan.

Additional secretary of the ministry, heads of its subordinate agencies and relevant officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were also present.
