Investigating officers probing the murder of a Class 7 student, whose body was retrieved from a paddy field in Lalmai, Cumilla, have recovered closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage tracking her final movements prior to her death.
The footage captures the teenager alighting from an "Iconic Paribahan" bus originating from Cox's Bazar in front of the Nurjahan Hotel at Paduar Bazar around 11:45 PM on Wednesday (October 7).
Video recordings show the girl approaching nearby eateries and stationery shops, engaging briefly with a shopkeeper who appeared to offer directions. She was last seen leaving the area around 12:15 AM. Authorities are currently examining her subsequent route and potential modes of transport.
Investigators are evaluating whether the victim met anyone at Paduar Bazar and examining her potential connection to an abandoned auto-rickshaw found near the crime scene.
Signs of Struggle at Crime Scene
Police retrieved the victim's body on Thursday (October 8) morning from a secluded paddy field adjacent to the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway in Jagatpur village.
Flattened crops across four to five adjoining fields and a abandoned auto-rickshaw indicated a severe struggle. Local residents who discovered the site noted that the victim's head was submerged in mud with a cloth wrapped tightly around her neck.
According to family members, the girl left her rented residence in the Racecourse area of Cumilla city on October 4 to visit a friend, subsequently traveling to Cox's Bazar. Although repeated phone calls from her family went unanswered on Wednesday night, the victim transmitted a text message containing her live location to her father at approximately 1:45 AM, requesting to be picked up.
Her father discovered the message the following morning upon waking, subsequently arriving at the live location as police were recovering the body.
Police Launch Multi-Unit Inquiry
Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman stated that while the exact cause of death awaits forensic confirmation, multiple police units are investigating the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar South Circle) Mostain Billah Ferdous confirmed that the impounded auto-rickshaw bears valid registration details, which investigators are utilizing to trace suspects.
The victim's father has filed a murder case against unidentified individuals with Lalmai Police Station.
