The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has approved two new departments at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia under the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies.
The two newly approved departments are Comparative Tafseer and As-Sirat an-Nabawiyyah.
The approval was conveyed in a letter sent to the university registrar on 04 October by the Inspection and Monitoring Branch of the UGC.
According to the letter, the permission was granted based on the recommendations of a UGC-formed committee, taking into account the university’s preliminary infrastructure and overall facilities, statutory provisions, approval from the Academic Council and Syndicate, as well as the future employment prospects of potential graduates.
As per UGC conditions, student enrollment in these two departments will begin from the 2026–27 academic session. A maximum of 40 students can be admitted to the undergraduate level in each department per academic year.
However, no new posts for teachers, officers, or staff have been sanctioned for now to conduct the departments' academic activities. The letter noted that once academic operations begin, posts will be cleared gradually based on the university's needs.
Earlier, the decision to open these two departments was taken at the 130th meeting of the university's Academic Council on May 26 last year, and finalized in the Syndicate meeting on May 31.
Following the UGC’s approval, the opportunity to enroll students in these departments is now set for the 2026–27 academic session.
