Dhaka University English department Associate Professor Tasnim Siraj Mahbub has sought an impartial investigation into a classroom controversy over a student wearing a niqab, expressing concern about her personal safety following alleged threats and harassment.
In a Facebook Live session on Saturday (October 10), she said she had difficulty identifying the student because her entire face, including her eyes, was covered. She denied asking the student to remove her niqab or leave the classroom.
Tasnim also sought an opportunity to explain her position, saying her courses had been reassigned to other teachers before she could present her account.
Earlier, female students submitted a written complaint demanding an investigation and her permanent expulsion if the allegations were proven. The department chairman said an emergency academic committee had decided that she would not conduct classes for the time being.
