A Dhaka court on Sunday remanded a retired police inspector and two others for two days in a case over allegedly demanding Tk 10 lakh in extortion from a jewellery shop in Tantibazar, posing as Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junayed passed the order following a plea by the investigation officer, SI Md Ejazul Haque of Kotwali Police Station.
The accused are retired inspector SM Mostak Ahmed(65), CID constable Md Hasan Sheikh(38) and Md Abul Kalam Azad, (52).
According to the case statement, the accused allegedly entered "Arshibad", a jewellery shop in Tantibazar under Kotwali Police Station, on October 6 and threatened the shop owner's brother and son while demanding Tk 10 lakh. They allegedly threatened to abduct them if they refused to pay.
After being informed of the incident, a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Enayet Kabir Shoaib, went to the scene and detained the three men.
Police seized a grey CID jacket, a pair of handcuffs, a police field cap, a stamped identity card and other items from their possession.
Shop owner Liton Deb subsequently filed a case with Kotwali Police Station. The investigation officer later sought a 10-day remand for the accused. The court initially sent them to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Sunday.
During Sunday's hearing, defence lawyer Advocate Abul Kalam Azad sought cancellation of the remand plea and bail for the accused. The prosecution opposed the request. After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand for each of the three accused.
