Customs officials have seized diamonds, platinum and gold jewellery, along with precious stones worth an estimated Tk 2.7 crore, concealed inside pickle jars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. A passenger, identified as Md Jony Rahman, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Dhaka Customs House confirmed the seizure on Sunday, October 11.
According to customs sources, preventive team members and officials on duty during the airport’s C shift received a tip-off about a passenger arriving from Kolkata on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-396 at around 8:30 PM on Saturday.
Under surveillance, Jony Rahman was identified after completing immigration and attempting to pass through the green channel without making a baggage declaration.
A scan of his bag detected metal objects inside pickle jars. A subsequent search led to the recovery of jewellery and precious stones concealed inside the jars.
The seized items included 389 diamond-studded gold rings, 151 platinum rings, three white gold rings, two silver rings, five gold lockets and a gold chain.
Customs officials also recovered 472 diamond nose studs, 45 carats of diamond stones, 720 topaz and ruby stones, and 23 jewellery certificate cards. The total weight of the recovered items was 1,054 grammes.
The preventive team of Dhaka Customs House filed a criminal case against Jony Rahman with the relevant police station.
According to customs officials, the seized jewellery and precious stones have an estimated market value of Tk 2.7 crore. The passenger’s purpose in bringing the items into the country and other related details will be established through investigation.
