Around 1,200 stranded tourists left Sajek in Khagrachhari for the district headquarters under a special security escort on Sunday amid an indefinite blockade on the Dighinala–Sajek road. Meanwhile, around 1,000 more tourists headed towards the popular hill destination despite the blockade.
The blockade began on Sunday morning, disrupting traffic on the road and raising concerns over tourists’ travel and safety.
Local sources said a special escort was arranged to help stranded tourists return safely to Khagrachhari. The tourists left Sajek at around 2:30 PM, according to Mati Joy Tripura, joint general secretary of the Sajek Resort Owners’ Association.
Despite the blockade, more than 100 vehicles, including 58 locally used four-wheel-drive jeeps known as *Chander Gari*, headed towards Sajek carrying tourists. Around 1,000 tourists were expected to enter the area, Mati Joy said.
Sajek is one of Bangladesh’s popular tourist destinations and attracts large crowds during public holidays and extended vacations. The blockade has disrupted transport services, with concerns that a prolonged shutdown could increase difficulties for tourists, transport workers and local businesses.
Officer-in-Charge of Sajek Police Station Tofazzal Hossain said tourist vehicles had left Sajek for Khagrachhari. Blockade supporters were stationed at Gangaram Bazar along the route, while law enforcement agencies remained on alert.
