Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Ghulam Parwar has criticised the government over the country’s law and order situation, accusing it of using fear tactics to divert attention from demands for implementing the referendum verdict and controlling rising prices.

He made the remarks at an exchange of views with journalists at the Jashore Press Club on Sunday while discussing preparations for a long march scheduled for October 31 through Khulna, Jashore, Jhenaidah and Kushtia.

Parwar said the programme was organised to demand implementation of the referendum verdict, improvement in law and order, control of rising commodity prices and fuel prices.

He accused the BNP-led government of creating narratives about the return of the previous government through the 11-party alliance’s long march to divert public attention from what he described as legitimate demands.

“The government is trying to create different narratives to stop the movement for implementing the referendum verdict,” he said, adding that such tactics would not help the government ignore people’s demands.

Parwar also alleged that BNP leaders and activists were being appointed to government positions regardless of their qualifications. He further claimed that, most recently, no one outside the BNP had been given fertiliser dealership licences.

Criticising the country’s law and order situation, he questioned why police personnel in Khulna had been instructed not to move alone.

“How much must the law and order situation deteriorate before police are prohibited from moving alone?” he asked, urging the government to focus on security instead of making what he called irrelevant remarks.

Parwar said two previous long marches organised under the 11-party alliance had been completed peacefully and expressed confidence that the upcoming programme would also remain peaceful.

He apologised in advance to businesspeople, pedestrians and others in the region for any temporary inconvenience caused by the march.

Outlining the programme, he said it would begin at 8:00 AM on October 31 with a brief rally in the Baitul Mukarram area of Dhaka. A convoy of around 1,000 vehicles would then travel towards Kushtia via the Padma Bridge.

The approximately 12-hour journey is expected to include media workers, doctors, artists and members of various professional organisations.

Jashore district Jamaat Ameer Golam Rasul, lawmaker Moktar Ali, Gazi Enamul Haque and local and central party leaders from neighbouring districts, including Faridpur, Kushtia, Shariatpur and Gopalganj, were present at the meeting.
