The government has stepped up plans to relocate the Bangladesh Secretariat from Abdul Gani Road in Dhaka to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, with a new complex proposed at the former international trade fair ground.
The initiative follows instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. A project proposal has been prepared, although it has yet to receive approval. The government aims to launch construction in December, subject to completion of the necessary procedures.
The plan also includes relocating the lower courts of Old Dhaka to the existing Secretariat compound.
Public Works Department Chief Engineer Md Khalequzzaman Chowdhury said the prime minister had directed the relocation and that work on the project was being expedited accordingly.
He said the prime minister had already reviewed the proposed design and offered suggestions, which were being incorporated into the plan.
Officials concerned have estimated the project cost at Tk 3,409.44 crore, with an implementation period from November 2026 to December 2029.
The Public Works Department has prepared a layout identifying the proposed locations of the buildings. The Ministry of Housing and Public Works has also taken steps to include the project in the list of unapproved new projects under the Annual Development Programme for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The department has submitted the required information to the ministry.
Officials said the proposal was expected to be placed before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Construction work would begin after approval.
The government is targeting December for the foundation-laying ceremony, which the prime minister is expected to inaugurate. However, officials have expressed uncertainty over whether all preparations can be completed within the proposed timeframe.
The initial target is to relocate several ministries within three years, while completion of the entire complex could take four to five years.
Officials at the Department of Architecture said three alternative designs had been presented to the prime minister. Once the project is approved, the Public Works Department is expected to oversee construction.
