A Bangladeshi madrasa teacher was killed in a missile attack at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while travelling to perform Umrah, according to his family.
The deceased, Mohammad Nasrullah Badr, 35, was the son of Maulana Mohammad Ullah of Badarpur village in Dhalua union of Nangalkot upazila, Cumilla. He worked as assistant principal of Jamia Arabia Rabiu Ul Ulum Madrasa in Dhaka.
His brother-in-law, Maulana Mohammad Nasiruddin, confirmed the death on Sunday night.
Nasrullah left Dhaka on Saturday morning as part of a 45-member group travelling to perform Umrah. The group had a two-hour transit in Riyadh before proceeding to Makkah.
According to Nasiruddin, the aircraft was preparing to leave King Khalid International Airport for Makkah when the attack took place. Twelve people were killed in the incident, including two Bangladeshis.
Of the 45 members of the group, 32 were safe, while 13 were seriously injured and receiving treatment at different hospitals, Nasiruddin said.
Nasrullah lived with his wife and three children in a rented house in the Kamrangirchar area of the capital. His children are two sons, Jamil, 7, and Jawad, 2, and a daughter, Nabila, 5.
He was the sole breadwinner of the family, his brother-in-law said, adding that the family was devastated by his death and awaiting the return of his body to Bangladesh.
Nasiruddin urged the government to take steps to bring the body home as soon as possible.
Nangalkot Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Raihan said he had learned of the death from local residents and assured that the administration would provide all possible assistance in bringing the body back to Bangladesh.
