President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said he dislikes those who divide people by exploiting communalism, stressing that it cannot be a political ideology.
He made the remarks during an exchange of views with leaders of Thakurgaon Journalists’ Forum, Dhaka, at Bangabhaban on Sunday.
“As long as I remain capable, I will continue working for the people. I do not bring politics into personal relationships. I have friends in all political parties and maintain good relations with everyone. I want to work as a non-partisan figure. I belong to the general public,” he said.
The president said he wanted to remain connected to his roots and pledged to keep Thakurgaon free from communalism and drugs. He also sought journalists’ active cooperation in achieving these goals.
Speaking about development plans for Thakurgaon, he said a budget of around Tk 1,500 crore had been approved for a new road on the Dinajpur-Thakurgaon-Panchagarh route.
He said work was progressing to enable Thakurgaon Medical College to enrol students next year. He also urged journalists to monitor recruitment at Thakurgaon University and raise concerns to ensure transparency in the process.
The president further announced plans to arrange visits to Bangabhaban for students from next month.
He called on journalists and media workers to remain united in protecting their professional interests and rights. Ensuring job security, a fair salary structure and other benefits for media workers is essential to creating an environment for independent, impartial and responsible journalism, he said.
Describing the failure to ensure journalists’ welfare and legitimate rights as unfortunate for society, he stressed the need for media professionals to overcome divisions and work together to protect their interests.
The president congratulated members of Thakurgaon Journalists’ Forum for holding important positions at national media outlets. He also thanked them for their positive contributions to the development of the country and Thakurgaon and for supporting efforts to uphold people’s rights.
He urged the journalists to remain vigilant about development activities in the district and highlight Thakurgaon’s achievements at the national level.
During the meeting, the forum’s leaders congratulated the president on assuming office and outlined various professional challenges. They sought government support to protect journalists’ rights and ensure access to necessary training.
They also requested assistance in establishing a permanent office for the organisation and arranging emergency medical treatment for seriously ill members.
The president assured them of necessary support and wished the organisation success and its members well-being.
A 44-member delegation attended the meeting, led by forum President Manik Muntasir and General Secretary Delwar Hossain. The president’s military secretary, secretary, press secretary and other senior Bangabhaban officials were also present.
