India’s opposition alliance INDIA is set to hold a protest march towards the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Monday, demanding an end to alleged vote theft, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday urged opposition parties, students, youth groups and civil society organisations to join the march, warning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat that they could not silence the voice of India.
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul alleged that police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers had attacked students and women during a recent protest in Delhi.
“Young people of the country came out to protest peacefully in Delhi yesterday. Their hearts held only love, not hatred or anger. But the police and BJP goons attacked them. We do not want such an India,” he wrote.
The opposition alliance plans to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeking an end to alleged electoral malpractice, suspension of the SIR exercise and Kumar’s resignation.
Rahul called on people to set aside differences of party, gender, caste, community and state to stand together in defence of democracy and the Indian Constitution.
“Tomorrow, as Indians, we will march towards the Supreme Court. We will stand united, putting aside divisions,” he said, urging all opposition parties, young people and civil society groups to participate.
He also named Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and RSS chief Bhagwat, saying they would not be able to silence the country’s voice.
“These cowards cannot intimidate us. They will have to step aside. We will march together with the spirit of love, brotherhood and patriotism. Do not be afraid,” Rahul said.
The Congress leader had earlier announced that the INDIA alliance would return to the streets on October 12, following protests in Delhi during which he alleged that police and BJP workers had used violence against students and women.
He also said opposition leaders would seek a meeting with Chief Justice Surya Kant to demand accountability over the alleged attacks and police conduct during the demonstrations.
Rahul argued that those responsible for upholding the law should not remain silent when, as he put it, the Constitution was being undermined and democracy trampled upon.
