A total of 2,100 tourists have safely left Sajek Valley in Rangamati and reached Khagrachhari town after the administration announced an indefinite closure of the popular tourist destination amid concerns over law and order.
Around 1,250 tourists reached Khagrachhari town on Sunday night (October 11), while the remaining 850 stranded visitors were escorted to the town with the assistance of the army on Monday (October 12).
The Rangamati district administration announced the closure of Sajek from 6:00 PM on Sunday until further notice, citing concerns over a possible deterioration in the law and order situation amid a struggle for dominance between two regional organisations in the area.
Many tourists had travelled to Sajek without knowing about the closure beforehand, leaving some stranded after the announcement. The army subsequently assisted in bringing them back to Khagrachhari in groups.
Earlier, Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkha Committee and the Karbari Association suspended their two-day road blockade programme following assurances from the administration. Road traffic on the Sajek route resumed on Sunday afternoon after remaining suspended for around 11 hours.
The blockade had caused severe difficulties for tourists travelling between Sajek and Khagrachhari, as well as transport workers.
Preparations had been under way for a large influx of visitors to Sajek during the government holidays for Durga Puja and the weekly holidays. The sudden closure has raised concerns among tourists and those involved in the hotel, cottage, resort and transport businesses, with travel plans disrupted for visitors who had made advance bookings.
The administration has advised tourists to avoid travelling to Sajek until the situation returns to normal. The destination will remain closed until further notice.
Tourists have also been urged to follow official instructions, check the latest situation with the relevant authorities before starting their journeys and avoid travelling along risky roads without permission.
