Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have given newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam an ultimatum to resign or remain confined inside the university building.
The protesters said on Monday (October 12) evening that they would allow him to leave the campus safely if he submitted his resignation in writing or publicly announced it.
The students claimed they had locked the building housing the vice-chancellor's office and disconnected its electricity after he failed to meet a noon deadline to leave.
They said their main demand was the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem. The students vowed to keep Sheikh Shariful Alam confined until the demand was met.
The dispute over the vice-chancellor's appointment has triggered protests at CUET since September 21, disrupting academic and administrative activities. Students have boycotted classes and examinations, while teachers, officers and employees have also joined protest programmes.
Meanwhile, the CUET Teachers' Association, Officers' Association and Staff Association have announced a total non-cooperation programme, demanding a resolution to the deadlock and the restoration of normal university operations.
