The government is considering introducing supplementary examinations for students who fail one or two subjects in the SSC and equivalent examinations, allowing them to enrol in college in the same academic year, Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee President and Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman said on Sunday (October 11).

He said the proposal would be discussed at a meeting of all education board chairmen on Monday (October 12), focusing on ways to prevent students from dropping out and provide them with another opportunity to pass.

The proposals will later be presented to the relevant government authorities for a final decision, he added.

Akhtaruzzaman said introducing the supplementary examinations this year would be difficult because question papers require advance preparation and the Bangladesh Government Press (BG Press) may not have available printing slots. Question papers generally need to be prepared around three months in advance.

However, students who fail one or two subjects will be allowed to enrol in college in the same academic year, he said.

Around 690,000 students failed in one or more subjects in the latest SSC and equivalent examinations, according to the report.

Under the existing system, students who fail public examinations generally have to wait until the following year to retake the tests. The proposed system aims to reduce delays in education and ease the mental pressure on students who fail only a few subjects.
