Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has announced plans to form a committee led by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to review English-medium students’ admission opportunities at public universities in Bangladesh.

Speaking at a seminar in Dhaka on Sunday (October 11), the minister said the committee would examine admission arrangements for students who complete O-Level and A-Level examinations under foreign curricula and recommend ways to ensure equal opportunities.

The government will formulate a policy based on the committee’s recommendations, he said.

Referring to India and Pakistan, Milon said the two countries had clear guidelines for recognising O-Level and A-Level qualifications alongside their national education systems.

He said Bangladesh was also working to ensure equivalence across different levels of education.

The minister also stressed the need to strengthen the teaching of Bangla language, Bangladesh’s history and culture in English-medium schools.

The seminar was organised by the Alliance of Private English Medium Schools. UGC member Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun, university vice-chancellors and other education representatives also attended the event.
