GAZIPUR, Oct 12: Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has called for applying technology in harmony with the country’s realities and people’s needs.

He said innovative power and engineering knowledge must be used to solve the country’s various problems. In particular, attention must be given to ensuring basic services in an affordable manner for those who cannot bear the cost of expensive technology and solutions.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the 38th convocation of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Gazipur on Sunday.

The education minister said the true success of education is revealed only when people’s actions make others’ lives more beautiful and prosperous. Therefore, after completing one’s education, one must dedicate oneself to the service of the country and society.

Addressing IUT students, he said they are about to begin their professional lives at a time when artificial intelligence and rapid technological change are creating new situations every day. They must acquire the ability to use new technologies and tools to face these challenges. He also expressed hope that students will contribute to the country’s development and progress by applying their intellect and creativity.

Describing the convocation as an important milestone in students’ lives, the minister said it is a recognition of years of hard work. For parents, it is a moment when their sacrifices bear fruit, and for teachers, it is an occasion for joy-when their students are prepared to move on to the next stage of life.

Noting that the presence of the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh is a matter of pride, the education minister said Bangladesh’s relationship with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is long-standing and valuable. This university is a practical and effective reflection of that relationship.

He said students from various countries come here to study with different languages and cultures. The university has created a common ground for them to acquire education. The bonds built here can turn into lasting partnerships in research, industry and education in the future. He expressed hope that the university will also play an important role in strengthening mutual cooperation among the countries concerned. The minister thanked the OIC and its member states for their continued support to the university.

Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin and former professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Dr Md Kaykobad spoke as convocation speakers at the event. IUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Mamun Bin Ibne Reaz delivered the welcome address.

At the convocation, 659 students were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Seven students received gold medals for good results. Sumaiya Ahmed Rani, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, received the OIC Gold Medal. The other six students received IUT Gold Medals. The education minister adorned them with the medals and handed over the certificates.
