Dear Sir,
Although traffic on city roads often decreases after dark, pedestrian safety remains a serious concern. In many areas, street lighting is inadequate, while existing lights are often out of order. Footpaths are occupied or unavailable, forcing pedestrians to walk along roads where darkness and reckless driving increase the risk of accidents.
Women, students, elderly people and those returning home from work at night face particular difficulties. Illegal parking and unsafe road crossings further worsen the situation, making ordinary journeys stressful and dangerous.
Pedestrian safety is not a luxury but a basic civic right. The relevant authorities must regularly inspect street lighting at night and promptly repair faulty lights. They should also clear occupied footpaths, ensure safe crossings and strengthen surveillance in vulnerable areas. Regular drives against reckless driving and strict enforcement of traffic laws are equally necessary. Coordinated and timely action is essential to make our cities safer for pedestrians after dark.
