At least six people were killed and 30 others injured after 14 carriages of a passenger train derailed near the Sher Shah Bridge in Multan, Punjab province, Pakistan, early Tuesday (October 13).

The accident occurred at around 5:15AM local time as the train was travelling from Karachi to Peshawar. Rescue workers launched an operation to recover passengers from the derailed carriages, with the injured taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for treatment.

According to Pakistani media reports citing police and rescue officials, rescue operations had been completed in 13 carriages, while efforts were continuing in the remaining carriage. The cause of the derailment has not yet been officially determined.

A passenger told reporters that railway workers had repaired nuts and bolts on the train's ninth carriage near Rohri before the accident. However, no link between the repair work and the derailment has been established.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the accident and directed the authorities to expedite rescue operations and ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi also expressed condolences over the casualties and instructed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured.

According to a statement from the Railways Ministry, Abbasi headed to the accident site to assess the situation and oversee rescue and relief operations. He also announced compensation for the deceased and injured passengers in accordance with railway insurance policies. A railway spokesperson said train services had returned to normal via Lodhran and Jahanian.

The accident has renewed concerns over railway safety and maintenance in Pakistan, where major train derailments have occurred in recent years. In August 2023, at least 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured when the Hazara Express derailed near Nawabshah in Sindh province.
