With the five-day Durga Puja holiday approaching, city dwellers looking to escape their busy work schedules can explore a range of destinations in and around Dhaka, as well as beaches, tea gardens and natural attractions across the country, to relax and recharge during the festive break from October 20 to 24.

Long working hours, daily deadlines and the constant rush of city life often leave little time for relaxation. The extended holiday offers an opportunity to step away from everyday responsibilities, spend quality time with family and friends, and enjoy a change of scenery without necessarily travelling far from home.

October marks the gradual retreat of the monsoon, although warm and humid conditions, occasional rain and the possibility of low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal can still affect travel plans. Holidaymakers should check updated weather forecasts before setting out.

Places to explore in and around Dhaka

For those who prefer to avoid long journeys, several destinations in and around the capital offer opportunities for a day trip.

Purbachal and the surrounding areas provide options for a short drive and outdoor leisure, while the National Botanical Garden in Mirpur offers green spaces for a relaxed visit. The Bangladesh National Museum and the Liberation War Museum can appeal to visitors interested in history and culture.

Families and groups of friends can also consider Sonargaon in Narayanganj, where Panam City and the Bangladesh Folk Art and Crafts Foundation offer a glimpse into the country's architectural heritage and traditional arts. The destination can be explored in a day, making it suitable for those who want to return to Dhaka by evening.

Other options include the historic Ahsan Manzil, Lalbagh Fort and the Hatirjheel area, depending on opening hours and visitor arrangements during the holidays.

Escape to the hills for a change of scenery

For those seeking a break from the noise and congestion of Dhaka, the hill districts offer scenic landscapes, lakes and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Rangamati and Bandarban are known for their hills and natural surroundings, attracting travellers looking for a more immersive getaway.

However, travel to the Chattogram Hill Tracts requires particular caution, as access to tourist destinations may be affected by security concerns and administrative restrictions. Travellers planning to visit Rangamati, Bandarban or Khagrachhari should check the latest announcements from the local administration before booking transport or accommodation.

Sajek Valley has been closed to tourists since October 11 until further notice. Visitors should not assume that all tourist areas in the hill districts will remain open throughout the Puja holidays.

Sreemangal: A refreshing retreat among tea gardens

For a quieter holiday, Sreemangal in Moulvibazar offers rolling tea gardens, green landscapes and forest trails. Visitors can explore Lawachara National Park, spend time around tea estates and enjoy local cafés.

A two- or three-day trip may suit those who want to slow down and enjoy nature without spending their entire break travelling.

Cox's Bazar: A break beside the sea

Cox's Bazar offers an opportunity to walk along the beach, watch the sunset and explore nearby attractions such as Himchari and Inani. A three- or four-day trip can allow visitors to enjoy the coastline at a relaxed pace.

As October weather can still bring rain and rough seas, visitors should follow local beach warnings and avoid swimming when conditions are unsafe.

Sylhet: Green landscapes and flowing rivers

Sylhet offers a mix of tea gardens, hills, rivers and natural attractions. Travellers can consider Jaflong and Lalakhal, depending on weather conditions and local access.

The region may appeal to those interested in photography, boat trips and scenic drives. Visitors should check river conditions and transport arrangements, particularly if heavy rain is forecast.

Kuakata for sunrise and sunset views

Kuakata in Patuakhali is another option for a coastal holiday. Known for views of both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal, the beach destination can be explored over a two- or three-day trip.

Visitors can enjoy the beach, sample local seafood and explore nearby attractions, while checking transport schedules and accommodation availability before departure.

Sonargaon for a one-day trip

Those who prefer a short excursion without spending several nights away can visit Sonargaon in Narayanganj. Panam City and the Bangladesh Folk Art and Crafts Foundation offer opportunities to explore the country's architectural heritage and traditional arts.

The destination is suitable for travellers seeking a relatively low-cost trip from Dhaka.

Plan ahead for a relaxing break

A holiday does not have to involve visiting as many places as possible. Choosing a destination based on available time, budget and personal interests can make the break more enjoyable.

Travellers should book transport and accommodation early, check attraction opening hours and monitor weather updates before departure. Those planning trips to coastal or hill areas should also verify local safety conditions and any travel restrictions.

For people who spend much of the year balancing work, family responsibilities and deadlines, the Puja holiday offers a chance to pause, regain energy and return to their daily routines refreshed.
