India has dispatched the first batch of 18 passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway under a deal to supply 200 broad-gauge coaches, paving the way for the possible launch of two new intercity trains on the Dhaka-Pabna and Dhaka-Khulna routes.

The coaches were sent from the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab, on October 12. The shipment comprises 11 non-AC Shovan chair cars, three AC chair cars, two AC sleeper cars and two AC power cars equipped with guard compartments and luggage space.

Under an agreement signed between Bangladesh Railway and India's state-owned Rail India Technical and Economic Services Limited (RITES) on May 20, 2024, the remaining coaches are scheduled to be supplied, tested and commissioned by October 9, 2027.

According to relevant sources, the coaches will enter Bangladesh through the Gede-Darshana cross-border rail link. After handover, an Indian technical team may carry out commissioning preparations and trial operations at the Saidpur Railway Workshop.

The coaches have been designed to meet Bangladesh Railway's operational requirements, featuring stainless-steel structures, adjustable reclining seats, footrests, CCTV surveillance, fire-safety equipment and bio-toilets. They are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour.

Railway sources said Bangladesh Railway had begun preparations to introduce two new intercity services on the Dhaka-Pabna and Dhaka-Khulna broad-gauge routes, subject to the availability of the new coaches.

Road Transport, Bridges and Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam recently told Parliament that 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches were expected to join Bangladesh Railway's fleet under a project. He said new train routes would be determined after the coaches arrived.

The additional coaches are expected to help ease the shortage of broad-gauge passenger rolling stock, which has constrained the introduction of more train services on several railway routes in the country's western region.
