Two passengers were killed and nine others, including a woman, were seriously injured after a covered van hit a leguna in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh on Friday morning.
The accident occurred in front of Nigarjaman Filling Station at Boga Bazar in the Guziam area of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Naim Mia, 23, son of Mofizul Haque of Rasulpur village in Gafargaon upazila, and Kamal Fakir, 40, son of Abdus Sobhan of Nigurkanda village under Harirampur Union in Trishal. Both worked as labourers at Dabir Uddin Spinning Mill in the Amirabari area of Trishal.
According to police and local sources, several mill workers were returning home after their night shift in a leguna. As the vehicle was making a U-turn in front of the filling station, a Mymensingh-bound covered van coming from the opposite direction lost control and rammed into it.
The leguna was badly mangled, leaving Naim and Kamal dead on the spot. Nine others, including a woman, sustained serious injuries.
Two units of Trishal Fire Service rushed to the scene, rescued the injured and took them to the upazila health complex.
Trishal Fire Service Station Officer Sadikur Rahman said the bodies were handed over to Trishal police in body bags.
Officer-in-Charge of Trishal Police Station Md Mansur Ahmed said the bodies were later handed over to the highway police outpost. After completing legal formalities, police released them to the families.
Selim Al Razi, assistant general manager of Dabir Uddin Spinning Mill, said a mill official was at the hospital to monitor the injured workers’ treatment.
