US President Donald Trump mocked the name Mohammed, widely used in Muslim-majority countries, during a campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia, on Saturday.
“If you’re suspicious of someone’s name in the Middle East, just say ‘Mohammed’. You have a 65% chance of getting it right,” Trump said, adding that he had been doing so for years.
According to Reuters, the audience remained silent following the remarks.
Trump was campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. He also claimed that Iran was the only country where nobody wanted to become president, referring to several people present as Mohammed and asking whether they wanted the position.
Iran elected Masoud Pezeshkian as president in 2024 following the death of former president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.
