Five members of a family, including three children, died after reportedly eating noodles at night in Nadia, West Bengal, India.
Police suspect food poisoning, but the exact cause of death is yet to be determined. A field unit and a forensic team are investigating the incident.
The deceased were identified as Mahesh, 37, his wife Lalita, 35, and their three children — Laddu, 11, Sakshat, 3, and Mishti, 7.
Neighbours and Mahesh’s mother said the family had eaten noodles the previous night. Their bodies were sent to a hospital for autopsies to determine the cause of death.
Police officers, ambulance personnel and a food safety team rushed to the scene after receiving information about the deaths.
Local MLA Dhirendra Singh said investigators were examining whether the food contained poison or if another factor had caused the deaths. Further legal action will be taken after the autopsy reports are available.
Nadia Deputy Police Commissioner Saran Kumar Singh told news agency ANI that the family had dinner between 10pm and 10:30pm before going to bed. One of the children had an examination scheduled for the following day. The incident came to light when the child failed to wake up to attend the exam.
