Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was stretchered off and taken to hospital after a head-on collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Chelsea’s Premier League match against Everton on Saturday (October 17).
The incident occurred in the second half when both players challenged for the ball from a free-kick. Medical staff treated Martinez on the pitch for around 10 minutes, immobilised his neck and provided oxygen before carrying him off on a stretcher.
Martinez was conscious as he left the field and was taken to hospital for further tests. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso later confirmed that the goalkeeper had regained consciousness.
The match was delayed for around 10 minutes before Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders replaced Martinez, making his Premier League debut.
Chelsea went on to secure a 2-0 victory, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals.
