The Star Trek franchise has introduced a new type of world, known as an “eyeball planet”, in its latest comic series, Star Trek: Zero Point, opening up a new frontier for exploration in the science-fiction universe.
Published by IDW Publishing, the first issue follows Captain Raffi Musiker and the crew of the U.S.S. Endeavor as they venture beneath the icy surface of Merexes III, a planet that has not previously been explored in the franchise’s canon.
The planet gets its name from its distinctive appearance, with a thick layer of ice covering most of its surface and a small circle of liquid water where it faces its star. Although Starfleet has surveyed and conducted limited mining on similar worlds, the crew’s mission marks the first exploration beneath the surface of such a planet in the franchise.
The expedition brings significant risks. The Endeavor must pass through the planet’s icy exterior and withstand extreme water pressure on a high-gravity world, conditions its hull was not specifically designed to handle. The crew has just 12 hours to complete the mission.
Musiker, previously portrayed by Michelle Hurd in Star Trek: Picard, leads the new series, which introduces fresh characters and expands the franchise’s scientific and narrative possibilities.
The introduction of the unusual planetary environment reflects Star Trek’s growing willingness to explore more ambitious science-fiction concepts that earlier productions struggled to depict because of technological and budgetary limitations.
