Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot is expected to begin filming in early 2027, with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink reportedly set to reprise her role as Jean Grey, according to a report published by The Direct on Monday.
The film is expected to arrive in 2028 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Seven, following Avengers: Secret Wars. An early 2027 production start would give the studio several months to complete filming before the planned release.
Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is attached to the project. Writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo have worked on the screenplay, with Jin drawing inspiration from the classic X-Men comics by Chris Claremont.
However, several casting details remain unconfirmed. Charles Melton was reportedly in talks to play Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, but is said to have exited negotiations. The report also suggested that Marvel was considering additional roles for characters potentially including Gambit, Mystique and Magneto.
According to The Direct, industry insider Daniel Richtman has also reported that Marvel is casting three additional roles, including a female character with a small part that could expand in a sequel, a male character who would be Native American or Latino, and an Asian female supporting character. The identities of these characters have not been confirmed.
The reboot is expected to explore the challenges faced by mutants as they encounter public hostility and government scrutiny. The report also pointed to the possible involvement of Mr Sinister, although the film’s plot and principal antagonists have not been officially confirmed.
Speaking to Collider, screenwriter Lee Sung Jin said he had been studying Claremont’s influential comic-book run to develop a story that feels fresh while drawing on the franchise’s history.
Claremont’s work includes celebrated storylines such as The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past and God Loves, Man Kills, which helped shape the X-Men mythology across comics and screen adaptations.
Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the reboot’s filming schedule or full cast. The reported early 2027 start and casting details remain subject to official confirmation.
