Bangladesh has been facing a severe and prolonged crisis after providing humanitarian shelter to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya forcibly displaced by conflict in Myanmar, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.

He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Julie Isabelle Bishop, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, at his office in the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The meeting discussed Myanmar’s current political and security situation, different aspects of the Rohingya crisis and the repatriation of displaced people.

Salahuddin called on the international community to play a more effective role in finding a lasting and sustainable solution to the crisis.

Bishop highlighted the ongoing conflict in Myanmar and said she was maintaining regular contact and diplomatic engagement with all relevant parties to help end the fighting and ensure the protection of civilians.

The meeting also raised concerns over the prevalence of landmines in border areas, human trafficking and drug trafficking, as well as their regional and global implications.

The participants stressed the need to create an environment conducive to political dialogue and mutual cooperation to ensure the safe, dignified and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland.

Additional Secretary of the Political and Immigration Affairs Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Political-1 wing Rebeca Khan, UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis, Senior Political Affairs Officer Duncan Keith Wilson and UNHCR Deputy Representative Juliette Murekezi Sone were among those present.
