A drone strike on a market in the disputed Abyei region along the Sudan-South Sudan border killed at least 153 people, with the death toll expected to rise, according to Reuters
Yohana Akol Ngor, Abyei’s caretaker information minister, said Monday’s attack hit Amiet Market, where fires continued to hamper efforts to recover bodies. Some victims were burned beyond recognition, he added.
Ngor blamed Sudan’s military for the attack, but Reuters could not independently verify responsibility. Sudan’s armed forces did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The strike reportedly hit a fuel depot in the market. Around 8,000 people were displaced, while Médecins Sans Frontières said it was treating more than 20 wounded people, including burn victims.
The attack comes amid escalating drone strikes in Sudan’s war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. The United Nations condemned the latest attacks, warning of their devastating impact on civilians and critical infrastructure.
