Janata Bank has denied reports that its main server was hacked or hit by a cyberattack, saying its website is being temporarily shut down during public holidays as a precautionary security measure.
The state-owned bank issued the clarification on Sunday (October 25), through a statement from its public relations department, rejecting media reports that its website had come under a cyberattack.
The bank said the reports contained misleading information about an alleged breach of its main server, insisting that no such incident had occurred.
According to the statement, Janata Bank and other major financial institutions in Bangladesh have stepped up security measures following international warnings about two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language for websites.
The warnings from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and other international organisations prompted the institutions to take additional precautions, the bank said.
As part of these measures, Janata Bank’s website has been temporarily made unavailable to general users during public holidays since Thursday (October 22), with services restored afterwards.
