Two get life for rape in two districts

Separate courts in Jamalpur and Meherpur districts on Saturday have sentenced two persons to life imprisonment over separate rape incidents.

JAMALPUR: A court in Jamalpur has sentenced a man named Musa Mia to life imprisonment for raping a teenage girl. The court also fined him Tk 5 lakh.

Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim of the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict on Sunday afternoon.

The convicted man was a teacher at a mosque-based maktab in Mondolpara of Sanandabari in Dewanganj Upazila of the district.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Fazlul Haque said Musa Mia, a resident of Fulchhari Upazila in Gaibandha District, raped a 15-year-old local girl on November 28, 2020, while running the maktab. Later, the victim’s mother filed a case with Dewanganj Model Police Station.

After hearing and recording the statements of 10 witnesses, the court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and fined him Tk 5 lakh in his presence.

MEHERPUR: A court here on Sunday sentenced a neighbour to life imprisonment for raping a 9th-grade student last year.

Judge Md Tajul Islam of the Meherpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict, sentencing 52-year-old Mosharraf Hossain, son of Nur Mohammad of Govipur Village in Sadar Upazila. The court also fined Mosharraf Hossain Tk 2 lakh, with an additional year in prison if he fails to pay.

According to the prosecution, the assault occurred on April 8, 2025, at the victim’s home in Govipur while her mother and sister were away. Mosharraf Hossain entered the house and abused the child.
The victim informed her mother upon her return, and a formal complaint was filed against Mosharraf Hossain two days later on April 10.

Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Mahtabuddin submitted a charge sheet against Hossain on November 30, 2025. Twelve witnesses testified during the trial.
