CHATTOGRAM, Oct 25: Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah said government officials should be place of trust for citizens.
He made the remarks on Saturday as the chief guest at a dengue prevention kit handover ceremony at Anowara Upazila Parishad.
“We have to ensure that people feel comfortable when they come to government offices and that their problems are resolved,” he said.
Zahidul Islam said government service was not simply about reporting to work on time but about fulfilling responsibilities to the public. Positions might change, he said, but an official’s contribution to the state and society would remain important.
He urged officials to accelerate their work, saying meaningful change was impossible if limitations were used as excuses. Citing the Liberation War, he said the determination and sense of responsibility shown by freedom fighters were needed to meet public expectations.
The DC stressed the importance of humane behaviour toward service seekers, urging officials to listen carefully, offer appropriate guidance and help resolve problems within the law.
Referring to the recent Durga Puja celebrations, the DC said cooperation between the administration and other stakeholders had helped ensure a peaceful festival and demonstrated the country’s communal harmony.
He also called for instilling moral values in young people, saying teachers and government officials should set good examples. He urged officials to ensure transparency in public spending and maintain the quality of development projects, including roads and bridges.
On dengue prevention and cleanliness, Zahidul Islam said cleaning activities had been underway since July 27 under a three-month special programme launched by the prime minister and the district administration’s “Nandanik Chittagong” initiative. The activities are conducted in different parts of the district every Saturday.
He said 250 truckloads of waste accumulated over about 14 years in the Chittagong District Sports Association area had been removed, demonstrating that even difficult tasks could be accomplished through initiative.
Praising coordination among government officials in Anowara, he said the welfare of the state and its people must take priority despite differences of opinion.
Among those attending the ceremony were Anowara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mohin Uddin, Chattogram Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam, Additional DC (Education & ICT) Pathan Md Saiduzzaman, and officials from various government departments.
