Veteran actor and Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) founder Iliyas Kanchan is showing signs of improvement in his battle against a brain tumour and is currently being treated with medication without the need for chemotherapy, according to an official of the road safety organisation.
Litton Ershad, secretary general of NISCHA’s central committee, shared the update with the media on Sunday, saying Kanchan’s condition had improved considerably.
“By the grace of Allah, Iliyas Kanchan is doing much better than before,” Ershad said.
The actor has been receiving treatment in London. After nearly 10 months of treatment, he returned to Bangladesh in August but stayed for only seven days before travelling back to London.
Kanchan was expected to resume chemotherapy after returning to the UK. However, it is no longer required at present, and his treatment is continuing with medication, Ershad said.
The actor was also expected to undergo immunotherapy, but his treatment plan currently involves medication. His speech difficulties are gradually easing, while his ability to walk has also improved, according to the NISCHA secretary general.
Kanchan, best known for his role in the blockbuster film Beder Meye Josna, founded NISCHA to campaign for safer roads in Bangladesh. Ershad urged people to pray for the actor’s recovery.
Meanwhile, marking National Road Safety Day on October 22, Kanchan issued a statement saying he was undergoing treatment in London due to his health condition.
Although he remains away from his homeland, Kanchan said his thoughts are with the people of Bangladesh and the road safety movement he founded.
He also expressed gratitude to those who had enquired about his health, offered support and prayed for his recovery during his illness.
