UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for “maximum restraint” and diplomatic solutions amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, warning that further escalation could push the Middle East out of control.
Speaking during a visit to Cairo on Monday (October 26), Guterres praised Egypt’s mediation efforts to create conditions for dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
“If the saber-rattling we are witnessing now translates itself into a major mutual escalation, the situation in the region can get out of control,” he said in a post on X.
Guterres also called for the full restoration of navigational rights and freedoms under international law in and around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, two key maritime routes for global trade.
His remarks came as diplomatic efforts continued to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran. Egyptian and Pakistani officials have also called for renewed talks between the two sides.
During a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, Guterres discussed regional crises, including the Gaza ceasefire, humanitarian aid and security developments in the Gulf, Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa.
The UN chief stressed the importance of keeping diplomatic channels open to prevent further escalation and promote regional stability.
