The Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) has demanded that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir withdraw his remarks about journalists within 24 hours, warning of protests otherwise.

In a joint statement on Monday, CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal and General Secretary MM Badshah condemned the IGP’s comments, calling them inappropriate and concerning.

Earlier, speaking at an event in Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka, the IGP alleged that journalists were reporting police ineffectiveness because they were not receiving money from drug traders.

CRAB leaders said allegations against individual journalists should be investigated based on specific evidence and addressed through legal procedures. They stressed that independent journalism plays a vital role in ensuring accountability and reporting irregularities.

The organisation warned that failure to withdraw the remarks would prompt coordinated programmes with other journalist bodies to protect journalists’ dignity, independence and professional rights.
