A cargo vessel carrying 1,200 tonnes of coal sank after being hit by an oil tanker near Sundarikotha in Mongla Port, with all nine crew members rescued alive.
The incident occurred late Monday night, and Mongla Port Authority Member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Md Shafiqul Islam Sarker confirmed it on Tuesday.
According to the cargo vessel’s crew, the MV Fulbari was carrying coal from the foreign commercial vessel MV Yas Jupiter, anchored at Hiron Point, towards Mongla when the oil tanker MT Jannatul Ferdous struck it near Sundarikotha.
The collision caused the coal-laden vessel to sink. Owned by IRS International, the MV Fulbari was scheduled to transport the coal to Badamtali in Dhaka.
The nine sailors aboard the vessel swam to a nearby cargo ship and were rescued. No casualties were reported.
The vessel sank outside the Pashur Channel, leaving navigation through the port’s main channel unaffected.
Commodore Shafiqul Islam Sarker said the Pashur Channel remained safe and vessel movements were continuing normally. The owner was taking steps to salvage the sunken vessel.
