BGB seizes garlic worth Tk 15 lakh, vehicle

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 1,719 kg of garlic and a vehicle allegedly used to smuggle the goods into India in Baghaichhari, Rangamati, and arrested two people.

The seized garlic and vehicle have a combined estimated value of Tk 15,15,700, according to BGB.

The seizure was made during a drive at the Kachhuchhari checkpost on the Majhipara-Kachhuchhari border road on Monday night, October 26, following intelligence reports.

Led by Major Sakib Ishraq Apurba, deputy commander of Marishya Battalion-27 BGB, the team stopped and searched a suspected vehicle, locally known as a Chander Gari, and recovered 44 sacks of Bangladeshi garlic allegedly destined for India.

The arrested men were identified as Binoy Chakma, 25, and Ripon Chakma, 19. The vehicle, bearing registration number Chattogram-Kha-3963, was also seized.

BGB handed the two men, along with the seized garlic and vehicle, over to Baghaichhari Police Station for further legal action. A case was filed on Tuesday, October 27.

Lieutenant Colonel Zahidul Islam Zahid, zone commander of Marishya Zone-27 BGB, said smugglers were attempting to use various methods to transport goods illegally across the border.

He said surveillance and operations had been intensified in border areas and that intelligence-led drives would continue to prevent smuggling.
