Police have arrested two youths for allegedly stealing a motorcycle by luring its owner through social media in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon. The stolen motorcycle has been recovered.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam confirmed the arrests on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the Hatshapila area of Mathurapur Union around 6:00pm on Monday. Police arrested the two suspects within six hours of the incident.

The arrestees are Md Siyam, 18, son of Mithon, and Md Rohit, 18, son of Jahangir Alam. Both are residents of the area. The victim, Humayun Kabir, is a mason from Parmanandapur village in Adhaipur Union.

According to police, Humayun had connected with the suspects through social media. While returning home from work in Paharpur on Monday afternoon, he stopped at Jabaripur Bazar to buy saplings at their suggestion.

The suspects allegedly took him to the Hatshapila area, where several accomplices were waiting. They assaulted him and fled with his motorcycle, mobile phone and cash when he resisted.

Humayun later filed a case with Badalgachhi Police Station. Acting on his complaint, police launched raids in different parts of the upazila, arrested the two suspects and recovered the motorcycle.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly told police that they used photographs and voice recordings of women on social media to lure men and extort money from them.

Speaking about the incident, Humayun said six to seven people were involved in the attack. He alleged that the assailants beat him on his hands and legs and demanded Tk 2 lakh in addition to taking his belongings.

Sub-Inspector Md Ziaur Rahman Zia of Badalgachhi Police Station said two suspects were arrested within six hours, while efforts were underway to apprehend the others involved.

Officer-in-Charge Habibur Rahman said police had launched an investigation immediately after receiving the complaint. A case has been filed, and the arrested accused have been sent to judicial custody, he added.

SP Mohammad Tarikul Islam urged the public to remain cautious when interacting with strangers on social media.
