A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclone Murasu, which is likely to make landfall along the coast of India's Andhra Pradesh early Tuesday (November 3), according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The cyclone is expected to bring sustained wind speeds of 80-90 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 100 kilometres per hour.
The IMD said on Sunday that the deep depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal had intensified into a cyclonic storm.
The development has raised fresh concerns for Andhra Pradesh, which was hit by Cyclone Arnab just a few days ago, causing damage in several areas of the state.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said there was a slight possibility of the storm intensifying further into a severe cyclonic storm. However, the current forecast indicates that it will make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast as a cyclonic storm.
The name 'Murasu', meaning 'drum' in Tamil, was proposed by India.
Meanwhile, most parts of India are likely to receive below-normal rainfall and experience above-normal temperatures in November, Mohapatra said.
According to him, India's average maximum temperature in October 2026 was the highest recorded for the month since 1901.
