MPO-listed teachers to be brought under new pay scale soon

MPO-listed teachers across Bangladesh will soon be brought under the new pay scale, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has said.

The minister made the announcement in a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday. However, he did not specify when the new salary structure would come into effect.

The government has taken the initiative considering teachers’ financial security, improved benefits and their longstanding demands.

The announcement has brought relief and positive reactions among thousands of MPO-listed teachers and employees. However, uncertainty remains over when they will start receiving salaries under the revised pay structure.

More than 600,000 teachers and employees across the country are currently covered by the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system. Of them, around 400,000 work under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, nearly 200,000 under the Directorate of Madrasah Education, and more than 23,000 under the Directorate of Technical Education.

Once the new pay structure is implemented, the basic salaries and house rent allowances of MPO-listed teachers and employees are expected to increase. Their salary grades vary depending on the level and subject of the institutions where they work. Under the new structure, they will receive salaries according to their existing grades.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry issued a circular implementing the new pay structure for government employees from July 1. Government employees received their October salaries along with three months’ arrears under the revised structure.

The implementation process for MPO-listed teachers and employees, however, is taking more time.
