US midterm election tomorrow

WASHINGTON, Nov 1: Millions of Americans are preparing to cast their ballots in Tuesday's midterm elections, with control of Congress at stake in a closely watched vote that could reshape President Donald Trump's political standing and influence over the remainder of his presidency.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are being contested, alongside 36 gubernatorial races and numerous state legislative contests. The elections will determine whether Republicans retain control of both chambers or Democrats manage to regain a majority and challenge Trump's legislative agenda.

Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, with a 218-214 advantage in the House and a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Democrats need a net gain of four seats in each chamber to take control, making several competitive races particularly important.

The election comes amid growing public concerns over the cost of living, rising consumer prices, immigration policies and the administration's economic decisions. These issues have become central to campaign debates, with Democrats seeking to capitalise on dissatisfaction with the Republican administration.

According to a September Reuters/Ipsos poll, Trump's approval rating stood at 32%, reflecting the political challenges facing Republicans as they seek to maintain their congressional majorities.

Several Senate contests, including those in Maine, Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa and Georgia, are among the closely watched races that could shape the balance of power.
